Our Approach to Auditions

New singers ages 8-18 are welcome to audition for the South Bay Children’s Choir in mid-August and again in early January. We believe every child can learn to sing, so no prior musical experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to try something new!

At this first meeting, all prospective members join together for a fun, low-pressure group session. There’s nothing to prepare ahead of time. Parents are invited to observe the opening portion before hearing a brief welcome from our choir manager, Susan Benson, who will share what makes SBCC special.

While parents learn more about the program, singers will move into small groups with our directors. This allows us to get to know each child and thoughtfully place them in the ensemble where they’ll thrive. Children are assigned to one of our progressive levels—Music Makers, Lyric Voices, Encore Chorale, or Bel Canto—based on age, musical skills, and vocal development.

Our Songbirds class is a joyful, energetic introduction to singing and music-making for children ages 6-7. Through creative play, movement, and musical games, singers build strong foundations in pitch, rhythm, and healthy vocal habits—without ever losing the fun. With an encouraging teacher and a playful atmosphere, Songbirds helps children gain confidence, make friends, and discover the delight of making music together. This non-auditioned class is the perfect first step for young singers ready to explore their voices in a nurturing and imaginative environment.

On your child’s first day with the entire choir, you can see if our choir is the right fit for you and your family. After this first day, if joining, registration payment will be due. Click here for tuition information and payment plans.

Please fill out this form if you would like to receive registration information. You are welcome to contact us at any time during the year, and we will notify you when we have our next open enrollment period.

We meet on Saturday mornings following the traditional school calendar (with winter and summer breaks) in the Music Building at El Camino College in Torrance.  The Music Building is at the corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Redondo Beach Blvd.  You can park in Lot K (Campus Map).

We look forward to helping your young singer find the perfect place to grow, learn, and shine!
